Guwahati: Even as the Congress in Assam is hoping for a fourth straight term in power after next year’s Assembly election , party vice-president and MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday did not rule out the possibility of an alliance in Assam that contradicts chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s stand that the party will fight the polls on its own in the state.
“Confabulations are going on with different parties,” Gandhi told the media here on sidelines of a programme, as he undertook his two-day visit to the state on Friday afternoon.
He, however. Stopped short of dropping names of any party that was in touch with the Congress for poll alliance.
He said the decision on any poll tie-up would be taken by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Assam PCC chief Anjan Dutta and added, “The CM and Anjan Dutta are in charge here. I have confidence in them. They will take decisions for Assam.”
The Congress leader also expressed confidence of the party winning a fourth straight term in the state.
He said, “We have just defeated our opponents in Bihar and we will do the same here. Tarun Gogoi has worked hard for Assam and it will definitely pay off.”
Rahul after interacting with with members of women self-help groups here, said he was impressed at the work of the women entrepreneurs. “I am involved with similar work (of women empowerment) in Uttar Pradesh and am happy to see the progress here. They (participants) have raised some concerns and I will keep track of it,” he added.
The AICC vice-president attended an extended executive meeting of the Assam PCC after the interactionwith the SHGs and later, participated in a prize distribution ceremony of competitions organized coinciding with 125th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
