SHILLONG: Quashing fears of environmental hazard, Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has assured that the Government will use the latest and environment friendly system in the new landfill site it plans to build in the city.
The State Government intends to construct a new landfill site at Umsawli for which environmental clearance has been sought from the Union Government. According to Lyngdoh, the dumping site at Mawlai Mawiong is old and has exhausted its lifespan.
The dumping site in Mawiong was constructed in the late 1960s.
“Residents can rest assured that we will no longer use old systems which were used in the 60s. Now we have new technologies which are environment friendly and self sustainable,” she said.
Meanwhile, an official of the Urban Affairs department said that work is going on for the landfill inside Marten.
“The agreement was terminated with the contractor for non performance for Phase I and accordingly re tendering has been done for Phase I and Phase II for the landfill inside Marten”.
