SHILLONG: The headman of Sutnga has alleged that there has been a huge misappropriation of funds in the Centrally-sponsored National Rural Drinking Water Supply Programme (NRDWP) scheme to implement the Synrang Umlawe combined water supply project (Phase I and II).
Accusing the contractor working on the project of misappropriating funds to the tune of over Rs 56 lakh, the headman demanded that the scheme be cancelled or the anomalies be set right.   The headmen alleged that RTI findings revealed that out of the estimated Rs 114,22,66,200 meant for the project Rs 56,26,890 was misappropriated by the contractor, L Lyngdoh. The project aimed at providing drinking water to 44 households in East Jaintia Hills,23 households in Rymbai and 21 in Sutnga.
The headman also claimed that the source of the drinking water, Synrang Umlawe was a small river incapable of providing drinking water to 44 households.
