Assam Govt orders probe into Congress office attack
Guwahati: Six BJP leaders and a four party workers were arrested on Tuesday afternoon for their alleged involvement in a clash between BJP workers and Congress supporters in front of Congress party state head office, Rajiv Bhawan, here on Monday even as the state government ordered an inquiry into the incident.
A police complaint was also lodged by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee against BJP leader and former Congress minister Himanta Bishwa Sharma for allegedly instigating Monday’s clash even as the state BJP accused Assam police of working under the influence of the ruling Congress.
Meanwhile, all the 10 were sent to judicial custody for 14 days by Kamrup Judicial Magistrate.
“We produced all the 10 arrested persons in the court, which sent them for 14 days’ judicial custody,” Guwahati Police Joint Commissioner N M A S F Haque told PTI.
The arrested six BJP leaders are Bijoy Gupta (the State BJP general secretary), Rupam Goswami, Diganta Kalita, Sanjib Mazumder, Mukuta Deka and Pranab Lahkar.
Assam Congress president Anjan Dutta alleged that the ‘attack’ on Rajiv Bhawan was instigated by Himanta Bishwa Sharma.
He claimed to possess a video evidence of Sharma’s role in instigating the BJP workers to ‘attack’ Rajiv Bhawan.
Meanwhile, the BJP has accused the ruling Congress of using the police machinery as its own tool against the BJP. The state BJP president chief and union minister Sarbananda Sonowal alleged dictatorial approach of the state government in dealing with the case. (With inputs from PTI)
