Tourists’ mobility to city viewpoint restricted
SHILLONG: After the terrorist attack on the Air Force Base at Pathankot, the entry to Air Force Station, Upper Shillong has been restricted for people.
Defence PRO, Amit Mahajan said on Wednesday that post terrorist attack on the Air Force Base at Pathankot, high alert has been sounded across India and accordingly the security of Air Force Station, Laitkor Peak has also been beefed up and as a precautionary measure, the entry to Air Force Station has been restricted.
He said that this would restrict movement of tourists to Shillong View Point even as he added that no restriction has been imposed on the movement of locals through the camp. The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills and the Superintendent of Police, Shillong have been informed of the restrictions.
It may be mentioned that on an average, more than 300 tourist vehicles and tourists exceeding 1600 enter the station in a day to the view point which is just 2 kms away, a distance that needs to be guarded.
He said that Anti-national elements could take advantage of the rush of tourists to pose a threat to the station, while adding that all the adjoining villages of Air Force Station, Laitkor Peak have been apprised of the current situation by the Station Commander and the village heads have agreed to extend wholehearted support to the station.
Presently, there are only two access roads to Shillong View Point both of which pass through the Air Force Station, Laitkor Peak. (Contd on P-10)
