SHILLONG: Enrolment of citizens under the National Population Register (NPR) is still making a slow progress in the State.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on the issue, Principal Secretary, PW Ingty said that though there was no real opposition to NPR enrolment, creating public awareness on the matter was the need of the hour.
He also informed that the Deputy Commissioners of respective districts have been directed to conduct awareness programmes on registration in NPR.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had stressed on the need to conduct an aggressive campaign on the implementation of NPR in the State and to sensitize people about its objectives.
It may be mentioned that some organizations had urged the Government to postpone the NPR enrolment until the issue of influx of illegal immigrants was properly addressed.
