Health Min indifferent, says Dorphang
SHILLONG: The public health centre (PHC) at Mawlasnai is running without a doctor for the last three years. The concerned doctor has failed to join duty for three years now causing immense hardship to the people of the area.
Expressing concern over the state of affairs at the PHC, Mawhati legislator Julius Dorphang, while speaking to media persons here on Friday, said he had raised the issue twice with the Health Minister but to no avail.
According to Dorphang, the Mawlasnai PHC caters to the medical needs of over 20 villages including those falling under Block-II area in Ri Bhoi.
“We were informed that the doctor refused to join the PHC and is on leave without pay,” the legislator said adding that “such an irresponsible attitude defeats the objective of the profession which is to save life.” Stating that the area is prone to malaria, he said, “Due to non availability of doctors in the PHC, people have to go to Bhoirymbong CHC or Shillong for treatment.” Presently, the health centre is equipped with only one Ayush doctor and other staff.
