SHILLONG: Two advocates General — P. Niroop from New Delhi and Sidhartha Barua from Noida — appointed by the state government on December 15, will assist the state government in Supreme Court .
Besides, the newly appointed Advocate General BP Todi and another additional advocate general WHD Synkhong appointed since 2013 will help the state in legal matters in state.
The appointment of additional advocates general came at a time when the office of the advocate general came in for severe criticism, especially on the performance of the then advocate general K.S. Kynjing, by the Full Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya during the hearing on the PIL pertaining to the dual membership in the Legislative Assembly and the Autonomous District Council.
With the appointment of Todi as the new advocate general and Niroop and Barua, along with the existing additional advocate general Synkhong, an all together new team takes charge to advise the state government on all legal matters.
Niroop, who has exposure to constitutional litigation in the apex court along with Barua will be in a position to have access to the eminent jurists and legal experts in Delhi, P.Niroop, with a standing of three decades at the bar, has strong views on the federal structure of India, more so in the context of the Northeastern states.
He is the founder member of a think tank NGO ‘Federal Institute of India’ through which information and knowledge pertaining to Federalism is disseminated and action programmes undertaken by providing the intellectual inputs.
