SHILLONG: Transport Minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh on Monday asserted that the success of the road safety campaign will undoubtedly depend on the role played by all the stakeholders.
Speaking at a programme organized on the occasion of Road Safety Week here, Lyngdoh pointed out that the government alone cannot achieve significant results when it comes to road safety, no matter how much resources are invested into the campaign.
Stating that the Transport department would continue to explore ways and means to spread awareness and educate people on the importance of road safety, he said that parents can instill in their young ones the basics of road safety habits and usage so that they become a way of life.
“Together with the schools, the Traffic Police and other community stakeholders, we can cultivate responsible road use among our children,” he said.
He also pointed out that road safety promoters in some of the major roads will encourage passengers to take responsibility for their own safety and it is in the interest of passengers to ensure that their drivers always obey the laws of the country.
Others who spoke at the function included Dr. S.R. Marak, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), and R. Wahlang, EAC, East Khasi Hills. H. F. Khongsit, DTO, Shillong delivered the welcome address while A. Shylla, Pool Officer proposed the vote of thanks.
Later, the Transport minister also flagged off a rally in the city on the occasion.
