SHILLONG/TURA: Former ANVC-B Chairman Bernard N Marak has been elected as the West Garo Hills district unit’s president.Marak was elected unanimously in the presence of senior members at its party office in Tura on Friday.Marak had unsuccessfully contested last year’s GHADC polls from Tura. However, for the first time, BJP’s Bhupendra R. Hajong was elected from Zikzak seat to GHADC under the constituency of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.When contacted on Friday, Marak said that it was around three weeks back that he joined the BJP following the formation of new state leadership.
According to Marak, the BJP wants to strengthen the party in the district and the entire Garo Hills. “Compared to the Congress, NPP and other familiar parties, BJP is new to Garo Hills and our task will be to popularise and strengthen the party in Garo Hills”, Marak said. According to Marak, people wanted a change as the prevailing situation is not conducive for peace and development. “We hope that with our hard work and people’s support, there will be a change in Garo Hills with the entry of BJP in the region”, Marak said. He also said that the party will not be lagging behind in the preparations for Assembly elections in 2018.
“We will go for more membership drive, and thus will strengthen the party. We will also take up burning issues concerning Garo Hills”, Marak added.
Asked whether he would be contesting the Assembly polls, Marak said, “It will be decided when the appropriate time comes”
