ADB project on segregation of waste
SHILLONG: The distribution of green and blue dustbins meant for segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste under the Asian Development Bank project has almost been completed in the urban areas of Shillong.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, ADB Community Development Specialist, Paul Lokho said that the dustbins have already been distributed to around 32000 households in the urban areas of the city.
The initiative was launched by the Asian Development Bank in partnership with the State Government to promote segregation of waste at the doorstep of residents.
According to Lokho, the Shillong Municipal Board will now ensure that the waste is loaded into two different vehicles in the respective localities where the dustbins have been distributed.
Reacting to a query about the response of the public towards the initiative, Lokho said that out of the 38 shnongs in Shillong, 32 are successfully segregating the garbage.
When asked about the awareness and training being provided on the new initiative, he said that ADB is conducting live demonstrations besides distributing paper hand outs.
He also said that the Government is constructing a new composting plant in the city which would start functioning in a week or two.
“Once the composting plant is ready, people would start indigenous centralized segregation,” he said.
To ensure proper disposal of garbage in Shillong and its outskirts as many as 49000 dustbins will be distributed in the non municipal areas of the city under the ADB project by May this year.
He also said that the shopkeepers and commercial establishments have to buy the dustbins on their own and the locality task force in various localities and the Shillong Municipal Board had issued a directive to all the shopkeepers and commercial establishments to use the colour coded dustbins by December 31.
