TURA: Residents of Dakopgre area whose houses were destroyed in an eviction drive in November 2014 have appealed to the West Garo Hills deputy commissioner to reconsider the recent order directing them to vacate the premises within two weeks.
The residents claim that the land belongs to them based on land documents issued by the Danakgre A’king Nokma which they have in their possession.
Earlier, the Nokma had also claimed in her letter to the government that the land measuring 746 bighas (from Goanang to Dakopgre) was leased out and not officially acquired by the Government under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894.
However, the Government maintains that the land has been acquired by it and is a part of the Extension Training Centre’s premises.
An appeal was also made by the residents against the deputy commissioner’s eviction order which was later dismissed by the Meghalaya Board of Revenue in September 2015.
The latest order by the Deputy Commissioner to vacate the premises was issued on the 19th of this month.
