Centre targets 15000 BPO employments

Workshop on NE BPO scheme held

SHILLONG: Department of Electronics and Information Technology of the Centre intends to generate 15000 employments in BPOs which will be setup in the North East region.
The statement came from joint Secretary of Department of Electronics and   Information Technology, Rajiv Kumar on Saturday during a workshop on North East BPO promotion scheme organized by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Government of India in association with IT Department, Government of Meghalaya and Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) held on Saturday at Hotel Polo Towers, Shillong.
Stating that conditions such as better infrastructure, improved internet and social and living environment are now available in the region, he added that the  cost operations of BPOs in the bigger cities have increased considerably  whereas North Eastern towns offer these benefits at lower cost.
It may be mentioned that the workshop was organised in order to promote North East BPO Promotion Scheme (NEBPS) under Digital India Programme.
He also said that the objective of the North East BPO Promotion Scheme is to create employment opportunities for the local youth in the North Eastern Region by promoting the IT industry, particularly by setting the BPO and ITES operations in the region.
According to Kumar, “the cost of setting up BPOs is quite huge and the department will take care of the initial investment by providing assistance of 50 percent in setting up the BPO”.
He also said that entrepreneurs will have to make certain efforts in marketing their BPOs and added that process quality is an important ingredient which entrepreneurs will have to look upon. “Under the North East BPO Promotion Scheme, the Government will provide financial support in the form of Viability Gap Funding, training support and special incentives to eligible companies for promotion of BPO operations in the region for employment generation and balanced regional growth, during the remaining period of 12thFive Year Plan”, added Kumar
The workshop was also attended by senior officials from DeitY, S. S. Garg, Senior Director, R.S. Jenwar, Joint  Director and Omkar Rai, Director General, STPI among others.
