SHILLONG: Work for the Umsning Bypass, an integral part of the Umiam-Jorabat Expressway Project, has finally begun.
An official source on Monday informed that work on the Bypass began last week with earth cutting and construction of culverts to be taken up in the first phase.
The project has been set for a June, 2017 deadline.
Asked why it would take 18 months to complete a 5-6 km stretch of the road, the official said the project would take time since the road would be constructed as per a new alignment.
The official also asserted there were no more hurdles to the project since all formalities for the land acquisition process has been completed.
Initially, the government had planned to continue with the four lane road from the existing NH 40 through the busy Umsning market but opposition from the NGOs and local residents forced the government to take up the Umsning Bypass project.
