Guwahati: Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday assured that a fool-proof security system would be put in place for the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) scheduled to begin here on February 5 next.
Guwahati and Shillong in Meghalaya are jointly hosting the mega event, which will see participation of over 4,000 athletes from eight countries.
Gogoi’s statement came close on the heels of the review meeting he had with army, police, para-military forces, intelligence agencies and sports administrators at Assam Administrative Staff College here to discuss the progress of the last minute preparations including security arrangement for the sporting event.
Gogoi said, “Government has arranged for a fool-proof security for the sportspersons as well as the spectators for the smooth conduct of the games”.
He said as far as infrastructural preparedness was concerned finishing touches were being and if there was any deficiency last minute steps were being taken to plug those.
“All the Chefs-de-Mission in charge of running the games expressed their satisfaction over the facilities that have been put in place.
Even the Sports Ministry of the Government of India has also appreciated the excellent work undertaken by the state government officials in preparing the stage for the prestigious 12th South Asian Games within such a limited period,” the CM said.
Meanwhile, the CM instructed all the departments concerned to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Assam along with its handicrafts, tourism potentials and refreshing beauty. Besides, instructions were also given to take care of all logistical issues, transportation, communication, accommodation etc.
Necessary directions were also given to Transport Department, PWD, Health, PHE, to take care of 4400 athletes who are converging in Guwahati for the games.
Gogoi has also appealed to the people of Assam to receive the sportspersons and administrators from eight countries with warm hearts so as to send out the message of camaraderie that will make the guests cherish the warm hospitality of Assam.
