MBA officials selected for 2016 SAG Basketball C’ship
Shillong: Two officials from Meghalaya Basketball Association, James M. Bamon and Yolinda Hynniewta have been selected by ‘Basketball Federation of India’ as National Technical Officials of the 2016 SAG Basketball Championship. This is the first time from the Basketball family of the state that officials are invited to an international event. James is an ‘A’ panel referee and Yolinda being a ‘B’ panel referee and also an NIS Basketball coach.
SAG launching ceremony creative director suffers injury
SHILLONG: Hindi theatre director and the founder of Rang Vidushak, a theatre group and institute in Bhopal, Bansi Kaul, sustained minor injuries when he fell after stepping into a hole during the launching ceremony of the 12th South Asian Games at the JN Stadium here on Saturday evening. Kaul was rushed to NEIGRIHMS where he was discharged after medication. Kaul was the creative director of the ceremony.
Olympian Punjab Police officer commits suicide
Jalandhar: A senior Punjab Police officer, who represented the country twice in Olympics, committed suicide at his house here, police said on Saturday. Narinder Singh, 46, a superintendent of police, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room in the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) campus here by his wife. He was taken to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared him dead. The officer, according to police officials, was under depression after being under suspension for the past two years. (IANS)
HIL: Mumbai beat UP Wizards 2-1, keep semis hopes alive
Lucknow: Dabang Mumbai registered their second victory of Coal India Hockey India League (HIL) defeating hosts Uttar Pradesh Wizards 2-1 here on Saturday to keep their semi-finals hopes alive. Despite the win, Mumbai stay in the bottom of the table with 14 points from six games, having lost four and won two. While Wizards, despite the loss, climb one place to third spot with 18 points from seven games, having won three and lost four. The visitors got off to a flying start inside eight minutes of play in the first quarter as Johan Bjorkmann deflected home a strike from Roshan Minz despite efforts from a charging Sreejesh. Mumbai will next face Delhi on February 9 while Wizards will take on Jaypee Punjab Warriors at home on February 10. (IANS)
Rio Olympics preparations to intensify with 22 test events
Rio de Janeiro: With six months to go until the start of the Olympic Games, another 22 test events will be staged to warm up the city for the sporting extravaganza. According to Rio 2016 official website, two most exciting competitions of the 22 test events will have tickets for sale. The first one, the FINA Diving World Cup, will bring together the sport’s global swimming elite from February 19 to 24 at Maria Lenk Aquatics Center. There will be 272 athletes from 49 countries and regions competing for 92 Olympic places, in 18 individual events and five synchronised events, Xinhua reported on Friday. (IANS)
