Congress-led govt wasted time, energy by implementing dual post bill: Titos Chyne

SHILLONG: Coming down heavily on the Congress-led government for failing to reign in one of their MLAs who continues to hold the dual post of MDC despite the Dual Post Bill having become effective in the State, the Opposition UDP has resolved to make the dual post issue an agenda in the forthcoming KHADC by-elections for the seven vacant seats.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, UDP’s East Khasi Hills district president, Titosstarwell Chyne, slammed the Congress for not taking any action against KHADC Chief Executive Member and Congressman P.N. Syiem who continues to hold dual posts as MLA and MDC.
Chyne also stated that the State government has wasted the time and energy of political parties and the people of the State by passing the bill.
It may be reminded that two UDP legislators – Metbah Lyngdoh (Mairang) and Brolding Nongsiej (Mawthadraishan) – along with four other MLAs had resigned as members of the KHADC following the passing of the anti-dual post act which became effective from October 1, 2015.
Meanwhile, speaking on the UDP’s agenda for the KHADC by-polls, Chyne said issues related to the State government’s interference into the domain of the traditional institutions, which is the subject matter of the district council, will also be taken up by the party.
Reacting to a query, he said that the party has directed the party’s circles to propose names of candidates for the two vacant seats of Sohiong and Nongkrem and added that the party has a probable chance of winning the bye-elections.
Earlier there were reports that former KHADC chief H.S. Shylla is all set to contest the bye-election to the Nongkrem seat as a UDP candidate, but the party denied having received any official communication from Shylla so far.
Meanwhile, the party has elected new office bearers for its East Khasi Hills District unit during the general council meeting on Friday which was attended by over 500 party members.
