SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will inaugurate the long pending Nongpoh jail on February 29.
Addl. DG (Prisons) B.L. Buam told reporters that once the Nongpoh jail is made functional, it will ease congestion  in the Shillong jail.
Initially over 60 under-trail prisoners, whose cases were registered in Ri Bhoi, will be shifted to Nongpoh jail.
With this, the number of under-trail prisoners in Shillong jail will be reduced to 300.
The completion of the Nongpoh jail had earlier missed several deadlines though the jail with a construction cost of Rs 6.25 crore was scheduled to be completed in 2010.
The delay in completion of the jail was due to financial constrains as a revised estimate had to be prepared instead of the original estimate of Rs 5.50 crore.
