SHILLONG: UDP president Donkupar Roy is set to retain the post for another term of three years with the ‘contenders’ deciding to opt out after arriving at a consensus on Friday on the eve of the party’s general council meeting scheduled on Saturday.
UDP working president Bindo Lanong in a statement on Friday night said he has “voluntarily withdrawn from the race to the election of party president to end all speculations and ensure smooth conduct of proceedings of the UDP general council”.
When asked, Lanong, however, added beyond his statement issued to the media, “Let there be smooth transition of power in such a manner that there is no remorse, ill feeling or dissension in the party”.
Lyngdoh said he wants to avoid any confrontation and        added, “Let the wisdom be exercised by the nomination committee of the party”.
When contacted, another working president Paul Lyngdoh downplayed reports about him being in the race for the post of party president. There is no trend of filing of nomination papers for the various posts in UDP as per the convention of the party, Lyngdoh said.
He however said, “Everything will depend on the nomination committee which will make recommendations regarding the selection of office bearers which will be finally decided by the general council meeting of the party.”
UDP general secretary Allan Dkhar said though there is a consensus regarding the post of party president, the UDP will go with an open mind and the nomination committee will take a call on the matter before giving final nod to the office bearers by the general council of the party.
