Garo statehood demand gains momentum

SHILLONG: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) along with Nokmas, church elders and political leaders gathered at Makalgonchu under Gambegre block to strengthen the Garoland statehood movement on Sunday.
The meeting was attended by people from and near Gambegre areas with a gathering of around 5000 people taking part in the procession.
The leaders who attended in the meeting were Jimbirth R Marak, MDC-Amongpara constituency, Besterfield N. Sangma, Ex-MDC Babelapara constituency, Nikman Ch. Marak Chairman GHSMC, Balkarin Ch. Marak, Co-Chairman, Austin B Marak, Chief Organising Secretary, GHSMC, Clever R Marak, and pastor Makalgonchu Baptist Church and senior citizens.
The meeting has collectively taken a resolution to form a unit in Makalgonchu area in order to strengthen the Garoland statehood movement and also resolved to give awareness campaign among the people of Garo Hills and also in every nook and corner of the region on the need to create separate state for Garos and to gain support for the future course of action.
The meeting also elected office bearers of GHSMC Makalgonchu unit Teseng R Marak as Chariman, Salcheng Ch. Sangma as the Co-Chairman and Homer Ch. Marak as General Secretary.
