SHILLONG: The KHADC has collected Rs 5,97,78,556 as professional tax since April 1, 2015, informed EM in charge Market, Hadrian Lyngdoh, while replying to a query raised by Mylliem MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew on the second day of the KHADC budget session on Monday.
Lyngdoh informed that 19,492 individuals are under the professional tax net and the amount levied ranges between Rs 200 and Rs 2500 per year depending on the gross annual income.
He informed that teachers have to pay professional tax while lawyers are exempted.
When Thangkhiew wanted to know the action taken against defaulters, Lyngdoh said the deadline to pay professional tax is March 31 and action will be taken if the tax is not paid by then.
Meanwhile, Thangkhiew sought discussion in the House on the lack of clarity on the powers bestowed and exercised by the KHADC, the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and the Meghalaya government, leading to frequent conflict.
However, since the MUDA case is pending with the High Court, the House agreed that the matter cannot be discussed in the House as it is sub judice.
