SHILLONG: In the wake of tussle between the State Government and the KHADC, the Council has proposed a sub-committee to amend the district council rule for the inclusion of a nominated member in the House instead of state government recommending the name.
The contentious issue of nominated MDC was discussed in the House on the second day of the budget session of KHADC.
A motion in this regard was moved by Mylliem MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew (HSPDP) suggesting the Executive Committee to amend the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Council) Rules, 1951 as amended with regard to the post of the nominated MDC.
“The issue of nominated MDC is still pending and has warranted passing a resolution to amend the rules to avoid conflict of power between the State Government and District Council. At the same time to maintain the sanctity of the House,” Thangkhiew reminded.
She maintained that the nomination of an MDC is the task of the District Council.
Similarly, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, another HSPDP MDC from Sohryngkham said, the KHADC has to find ways and means to come out of the predicament it is facing with regards to the nominated MDC issue.
Replying to the motion, KHADC chief PN Syiem said a proposed amendment sub-committee will be constituted to examine the matter.
It may be mentioned that the KHADC had unanimously nominated retired KHADC Judge J. Reenbohn as member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council through a resolution passed during the special session of the Council last December.
On the other hand, the State Government has forwarded Irene Lyngdoh’s name to the State Governor for his approval as a nominated MDC
In view of this development, the Governor had sent back both the proposals to the state government to decide who should be nominated to fill up the lone vacancy.
