SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) met the Deputy Commissioner , East Khasi Hills District, PS Dkhar in relation to the registration of names in National Population Registration (NPR) in view of the state’s influx problem.
They expressed concern as it would not be possible to withdraw one’s registration from the NPR once the name is registered.
Batkupar Wahlang General Secretary, KHNAM, while speaking to reporters said, “The NPR registration started way back in 2013, but since there is protest from many quarters we request the Government to examine the situation before starting the enrollment.”
NPR registration, they alleged has started in rural areas and KHNAM demanded a thorough examination on the matter from the government before finally implementing it .
Wahlang, however, stated, “We are not against NPR registration.”
Thomas Passah, president KHNAM Youth Wing said, “The Government should conduct awareness programmes in collaboration with the village chiefs to bring about a better understanding of the enrollment.”
