Allegation of State cops wearing auctioned Myanmar uniforms

SHILLONG: With the allegation of State police personnel wearing auctioned Myanmar uniforms bought from Bara Bazar, Home Minister Roshan Warjri on Thursday ordered an inquiry into the matter.
It was while moving a motion on the failure of the government to promote the welfare of the police department that  John Leslee Sangma (Independent)  pointed out that police personnel were found  wearing different kinds of uniforms and the glaring fact is that many have been using auctioned uniforms from Myanmar which are available in the market.
However, the Home minister in her reply assured the House that as the police personnel have to wear a particular colour of uniform, wearing of auctioned uniforms was a serious matter and the issue will be inquired into.
The Independent legislator pointed out that in the absence of identical uniforms for police personnel, militants can take advantage of the situation.
The legislator also raised the issue of the State government not paying the compensation for holiday forgone by the police personnel, who engage in duty even during holidays.
Sangma pointed out that earlier, Rs 2,500 was given as compensation to the police personnel for the holiday foregone, but the government had stopped the facility in 2014-15.
The Home minister countered, saying compensation for holiday foregone has already been paid and for the year       2015-16, the government is considering the payment.
Replying to other issues raised by Sangma, the Home minister said the issue of police officers taking money from Sumos plying from Guwahati to Tura will be probed.
“We will ensure that such harassment or abuse of power by the police is stopped,” the Home minister assured.
On the need for requisition of vehicles, the Home minister said that more vehicles will be purchased for the mobility of police personnel, who otherwise, have to requisition private vehicles and taxis.
Earlier, while moving the motion, Sangma stressed the need to provide better housing facilities for the police personnel besides up gradation of their barracks, police stations and arms, training programmes, and appointment of cooks among other welfare measures to empower the police personnel in the State.
