SHILLONG: UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday lambasted the Police department for floating a flawed advertisement for recruitment of police personnel in the State.
Referring to the advertisement publicized widely, Lyngdoh said women candidates eyeing a Police job will have to run 3 km in 7 minutes, which would be a formidable feat to achieve.
Reading out the world record timing for the 3000 m (3 km) race by women athletes which is over 8 minutes, Lyngdoh questioned, “Are we selecting women police personnel or athletes?”
“Even trained athletes cannot beat the 7 minute time scale set by the Police department,” he added.
Moving a special motion in the House on the unprecedented change of rules in the recent recruitment notification advertisement issued by the Chairman, Central Recruitment Board, Meghalaya Police, Lyngdoh stated that job aspirants have been debarred from apply for more than one post.
“That the candidate can apply only for one category of posts is a major flaw and it prohibits job aspirants from applying for more than one post. Even the UPSC and other central services direct its aspiring candidate to indicate their order of preference based on the rank in the examinations and the personal choice of the candidate,” he reminded the House.
“It goes against natural justice, it is unacceptable if suitable candidates are not allowed to apply for posts for which he/she is qualified,” he stated.
The UDP leader also took exception to a particular section of the advertisement which mentioned that the candidates should be able to speak, read and write at least one of the regional languages of the State.
“When was the Regional Language Bill introduced in the House? It was way back in 2005 that the Meghalaya State Language Act was passed under which Khasi and Garo languages were declared as associate official languages. Prior to the passage of the Bill, English was the official language,” he said.
Lyngdoh asserted that the advertisement will hamper the youth who are seeking employment and said, “It is time for this House to police the police as to why they came up with a ludicrous advertisement and that itself will have an impact with subjectivity and bias.”
Reacting to the motion, Home Minister Roshan Warjri said the issues raised have been noted down and will be seriously re-examined and appropriate action will be taken.
