SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is pessimistic about the return of GNLA chief Sohan D Shira from jungle as the latter has a slippery profile.
Giving details of the profile of an elusive Sohan, the Chief Minister had on Friday said in the Assembly that the militant leader had deserted ANVC after the ceasefire, but the government gave an opportunity for him to surrender after being requested by the civil society.
It was on August 25, 2007 that Sohan surrendered at the official residence of then Chief Minister DD Lapang.
Besides Lapang, Sangma, who was the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home and police officials were also present during the surrender ceremony.
The Chief Minister said that after the surrender, Sohan   was accommodated at the headquarters of Meghalaya police first battalion, but he indulged in criminal activities.
According to Sangma, Sohan should not have been kept at first MLP battalion as he had lured other police officers to join his fold.
After his surrender, Sohan was arrested and placed under MPDA for indulging in criminal activities , Sangma said. However, under pressure from various quarters, Sohan was released.
But after his release, with all the hidden guns and sophisticated arms, Sohan floated GNLA, the Chief Minister said.   “We are dealing with people who we have already dealt with. How sincere these men are for peace. They should demonstrate their commitment”, Sangma said.
The Chief Minister also pointed out that in the past, Sohan used to have home cooked food in his hide out and snacks made by his wife, however with the continued operations, the situation has changed.
