JD(U) to contest Assam Assembly poll, Nitish to campaign

Guwahati: The district administration of Morigaon district in Central Assam has made arrangement to facilitate differently-abled voters to exercise their franchise without any problem during the forthcoming Assembly election in Assam.
This was stated by the Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Morigaon, Rakesh Kumar in a meeting held on Monday with the Awareness Observer designated by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for Morigaon District Rajesh Jha.
The District Election Officer apprised the Awareness Observer that the facilities like provisions for ramp was already made available in all the polling stations of the three LACs of the District, namely, 79 Jagiroad, 80 Morigaon and 81 Laharighat. He added, “Now, in addition to these, we are going to provide vehicles, wheel-chairs and other possible aids so that they can visit their respective polling stations and cast their votes with much ease.”
He further informed that the Social Welfare Department was contacted for a list of differently-abled persons in the District. After acquiring the list a comprehensive mapping was done for providing them these facilities on the polling day. Meanwhile, with a view to increase voters’ turnout in the district and to motivate the voters to exercise their franchise, the District administration has been implementing a host of programmes.In this context, a voter awareness meeting under SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) activities was held at the DC’s Office on Monday.
District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar presided over the meeting. He apprised the meeting that the District Administration had been organising various activities, like: cycle- rallies, public meeting, Booth Level Officers’ meeting, awareness drive, road shows etc. to increase the voters’ turnout in all the three LACs of the District.
He stated, “Though the voters turnout of the District was quite good, 84.5 percent, in the last election, we all must work united to generate maximum awareness and motivation amongst the voters, specially the youth and women towards casting their votes so that the voters’ Awareness Observer for Morigaon district, Rajesh Jha in speech deliberated on the need of creating maximum awareness amongst the voters. He suggested a few measures for generating mass awareness on voters’ right.
Meanwhile, Janata Dal (United) has decided to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections and its leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar would campaign for the party in the state, said a JD(U) press release here. For finalising the list of the party candidates, JD(U) national general secretary Arun Kumar Srivastav is scheduled to arrive here on Monday, the release said.
Srivastav would hold discussions with sections of people before finalising the list, it said. JD(U) MP K C Tiyagi is also scheduled to campaign, the release added. Assam will go to polls in two phases on April 4 and 11. (With inputs from PTI)
