Awareness programme on Adolescent rights held

SHILLONG: A one-day Awareness Programme on Adolescent Rights: A Critical Agenda was held at Shillong College on Tuesday.
While delivering his inaugural address, the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills,  PS Dkhar stated that adolescence is identified as the period in human growth and development that occurs after childhood and before adulthood  and added that it  represents as one of the critical transitions in the life span and is characterized by a tremendous pace in growth and change, second only to infancy.
He added that violation of these Rights is seen almost every day in media reports, he remarked that legal mechanisms such as the POCSO Act, have been established by the government to but sadly cases of violation often go un- reported.
He said that such awareness programmes will go a long way in tackling such problems.
It may be added that this programme sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi saw the participants drawn from various colleges, universities and NGOs.
The resource persons at the seminar included Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Superintendent of Police (City) and officials of the Social Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya.
