United XI win in Super Division Shillong Cricket League

SHILLONG: United XI beat Nongthymmai CC by 67 runs in the Super Six of the Super Division LG Shillong Cricket Tournament organised by the Shillong Cricket Association at the SCA Cricket Ground, Polo. Put into bat, United XI scored 209 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 40 overs. Asa Warjri scored 39 runs off 39 balls (4X4s, 1X6s) and Sylvester Mylliempdah scred 37 runs off 41 balls. For Nongthymmai, Kunal Lama and Banpynshngain picked up three wickets each. In reply, Nongthymmai CC were bundled out for 142 runs in 39 overs. Sajied Bamon picked up 4/33 runs and Rajendra GC took 2/26 runs. For Nongthymmai, Rohit Chettri scored 20 runs off 38 balls.

Meghalaya boys to take part in U-14 national trials camp

SHILLONG: The All India Football Federation has selected three boys from Meghalaya from the last U-14 Zonal Qualifying Round held in Assam to attend the Trials Camp for the U-14 National Team to be held in Bhopal from March 21 to May 31. The boys are Ricky John Shabong, Iainehskhem Khongjee and Aenam G Jyrwa. They are expected to join the Camp soon. The Association send best wishes and regards to these boys that they can shine further and become star footballers in the coming years.

Barca paired against Atletico, PSG pool City in CL quarters

NYON (SWITZERLAND): Title holders FC Barcelona and La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid will meet in the last eight for a second time in three seasons while French champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were paired against first time quarter-finalists Manchester City, according to the Champions League football draw on Friday. It will be PSG and City’s second European competition meeting. Knockout stage debutants, Germany’s VFL Wolfsburg will face ten-time winners and Spanish giants Real Madrid. German powerhouse Bayern Munich take on Portugal’s Benfica. In the Europa League quarter-finals draw also conducted on Thursday, Liverpool was pooled against Germany’s Borussia Dortmund. Spain’s Athletic Bilbao will take on domestic rivals Sevilla. Portugal’s Sporting Braga play against Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine while Spanish side Villarreal face-off against Sparta Prague of Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Spanish football club Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone on Friday admitted his side had been given a tough draw in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after they were pooled against defending champions FC Barcelona. “Barcelona are an important rival and they are certainly the best team in the world, but what better for us to be able to face the best in the world? I find that very exciting,” said Simeone afer the draw was announced. “The word ‘favourite’ is dangerous,” he said. (IANS)

Hamilton fastest in first practice session of Australian GP

MELBOURNE: British driver Lewis Hamilton of team Mercedes topped the first practice session of the Australian Gran Prix, the first F1 Grand Prix of the season. German Nico Hulkenberg of team Force India came second ahead of Ferrari’s Finn Kimi Raikkonen here on Friday, reports Efe. Australian Daniel Ricciardo in his Red Bull finished fourth. Fernando Alonso of team McLaren had some problems with his car and finished in the seventh place. Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz spent most of the session in the garage because of problems with the fuel tank and failed to record a timed lap. The first practice session saw some rain and lots of tire changes. (IANS)
