SHILLONG: Efforts are on to speed up the formation of State Human Rights Commission and Meghalaya Lokayukta after the recent verdict of the Supreme Court vacating the stay of the High Court on a non-judicial member becoming the Chairperson of Lokayukta.
Earlier, taking suo-moto steps, the High Court had combined both Lokayukta and Rights Commission and examined certain clauses.
While vacating the stay on the verdict of the High Court on Lokayukta, the Supreme Court had on Friday directed the State Government to make the Human Rights Commission functional by June this year.
When contacted, State Government counsel in Supreme Court, Ranjan Mukherjee said that several names were suggested to the Law department to be appointed as Chairperson of Human Rights Commission.
An official source said that the State Government will also speed up the formation of Lokayukta in the State.
