SHILLONG: In view of the acute water crisis in Tura in different localities and to assess the situation Noverfield R Marak, Parliamentary Secretary, Urban Affairs and PHE and MLA of North Tura visited the main reservoir tank of PHE Department along with Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Pravin Bakshi and Executive Engineer PHE North Division along with people of the affected areas and others.
Marak inspected the water tank and reviewed the position of water supply in different parts of Tura.
Bakshi also inspected crucial water pipelines and ordered for their immediate repair in some places where the pipes had been damaged or tampered with.
He assured that shortly a prohibitory order will be passed to prevent tampering of water pipes which led to leaking and stealing or unauthorized use or altering the existing connections with the help of unscrupulous private plumbers.
In the last three weeks, several such cases have been brought to light creating difficulties for the genuine customers.
It was also suggested that intensive action needs to be taken against timber smugglers if any operating in the critical catchment areas. Though the spring catchment areas are in East Garo Hills – all support and cooperation will be offered from the district administration to counter the menace.
The Deputy Commissioner, has already passed a prohibitory order prohibiting rampant, unplanned and random jhumming near the catchment areas of Boldorenggre and Selbalgre.
In the next week, a consultative meeting will be held with the stakeholders to discuss issues to resolve the water crisis in Tura.
