SHILLONG: The five member Garo Hills United Alliance (GHUA) has threatened to abstain from the Budget session of the GHADC starting from Tuesday next.
The reason for the proposed boycott by the five MDCs who are in the Opposition is that the GHADC Chairman has rejected a motion to discuss the participation of non-tribals in GHADC polls.
The GHUA comprises Independent MDCs Levastone T. Sangma (Jengjal), Rupert M. Sangma (Tura), Deviar M. Sangma (Gasuapara) and Kenadik S. Marak (Siju) and the lone NCP member Rightious N. Sangma (Babelapara).
They termed the non admission of the motion by GHADC Chairman Boston Marak as arbitrary.
The GHUA members have also decided to inform the Congress members about the development and seek the party’s support.
However, the Congress had fielded non tribal candidates for the GHADC polls.
According to Rupert, the legislative branch of the district council had disallowed the motion.
The GHUA feels that the participation of non-tribals in GHADC election defeats the very purpose and objective for which the district council was created.
Rupert said that his intention of bringing the motion was in the interest of the tribal people. The rejection of the motion is an act of betrayal of the aspirations of the tribal people, he said.
According to Rupert, the continuation of the executive committee is against the interest   of the tribals.
The NPP led ruling Garo Hills People’s Alliance (GHPA) has the lone non tribal member S.G. Esmatur Mominul from NPP.
