Delegation of traditional heads back Syiem

SHILLONG: Traditional body, Synjuk ki Riew Rangbah has been slammed over its stand on the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Nomination and Election of the Syiem, Deputy Syiem, Myntri, Basan and Rangbah Shnong of Malai-Sohmat Syiemship) Bill, 2016.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, a delegation comprising of acting Syiem, Francis Sohmat, Myntris, headmen and secretary of Hima of Malai-Sohmat Syiemship condemned the ‘tearing of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Nomination and Election of the Syiem, Deputy Syiem, Myntri, Basan and Rangbah Shnong of Malai-Sohmat Syiemship) Bill, 2016 by Hilarious Wanniang of Synjuk ki Riew Rangbah on March 23.
The delegation also backed the decision of the KHADC under the leadership of PN Syiem to pass the KHAD (Nomination and Election of the Syiem, Deputy Syiem, Myntri, Basan and Rangbah Shnong of Malai-Sohmat Syiemship) Bill in the last Budget session.
Memorial stone destroyed
Meanwhile, Sohmat lodged a complaint that on March 22 eight persons destroyed one memorial stone and threatened the office bearers of the Hima with dire consequences.
“These opportunists who claim to represent the people of the Hima even destroyed the Monoliths at the Hima’s office despite knowing that the memorial stones stand for unity among the people,” he said.
Earlier, the Synjuk ki Riew Rangbah representing the people falling under the Hima of Malai-Sohmat Syiemship had slammed the KHADC CEM, for removing Iawrod as the Syiem of Hima Malai-Sohmat and appointing Francis Sohmat as the acting Syiem.
Sohmat said that Paialast Iawrod was removed as the Syiem of Hima Malai-Sohmat since his was an illegal appointment and against the customs and practices of the Hima.
