SHILLONG: Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmuganathan underlined the need for trade and commerce with the South East Asian Countries for the economic growth of the Northeastern region.
Addressing the inaugural function of the two-day National Seminar on the theme “Foreign Trade- A strategy for the economic growth of the North Eastern Region of India” here on Friday, the Governor stressed on the need for the North Eastern States to fully utilize the potentialities of the educated youth and to further strengthen and expand the economic ties with neighboring countries.
“With the availability of rich pool of human resources and natural wealth,” the Governor expressed hope that these can be properly harnessed to ensure all round development of the region.
The two-day seminar sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Research (ICSR), North Eastern Region and University Grant Commission, was organized by the Shillong Commerce College at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Laitumkhrah.
The seminar was attended by research scholars from Guwahati University, faculty members of Shillong College, St. Anthony’s College, Tura Government College besides the students. The seminar was organized to provide a platform for the resource persons and participants to discuss various issues on how to bring the North East Region at par with the rest of the country with focus on foreign trade.
The resource persons for the two day seminar included Prof. Sanjay K. Bhardwaj, Centre for South Asian Studies School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Prof. Saundarjya Borbora, Economics Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Manas Chaudhauri, former Minister of Meghalaya, R. Warjri, IFS (Retd), Loniak Marbaniang, former Minister of Meghalaya, Prof. Keya Sengupta, Indian Institute of Management, Shillong among others.
