SHILLONG: The joint inspection under the leadership of local MLA Sanbor Shullai and the members of the Dorbar Shnong, in the presence of doctors, staffs, surgeon superintendent, joint director and engineers from the health department on Thursday resolved to permanently close down the entrance from the morgue towards Red Cross junction at the Shillong Civil Hospital and proposed the erection of a high retaining wall to ease pedestrians.
The team resolved that the front entrance to the hospital  may be used for bringing in and taking out bodies.
As per the team, the incinerator should be repaired at the earliest so that the hospital waste remain within the hospital premises and disposed off in a hygienic manner.
Interceptors should be erected both at the inlet and outlet points of the drains from BAE Civil Cancer Wing, the inspection team said.   A statement issued to the media in this regard said that Laban is a highly congested locality due to presence of various schools and colleges which result in heavy traffic jam, especially in the Shillong Civil Hospital area.
As per local MLA, the presence of the hospital morgue close to Red Cross junction is adding to the problem as vehicles coming to pick up  bodies often park outside the hospital gate for long periods which makes it impossible for pedestrian to walk. Moreover, the stench coming out of the Morgue is unbearable as it is carried to far distances posing grave danger to the health of the people and also polluting the entire environment”.  He said that the incinerator of the Civil Hospital is non-functioning posing serious health hazards.
