FIRs against 7 cops for energy theft

SHILLONG: As many as seven police personnel under Police Reserve in city were found to be  involved in theft of energy, and accordingly Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited(MePDCL has filed FIRs against the accused police personnel.
The FIRs have been filed by Assistant  Executive Engineer  Arju Dkhar  at Sadar police station against police personnel Thigmen Sangma, Pinchang G Momin, Nijon Marak, Mukherjee Marak. Lovesh Sangma, Ballen Sangma  and Armit  Sangma.
The FIRs  stated that the seven police personnel,  who are the occupants  of the government   quarters  at Police Reserve are  unregistered  consumers of MePDCLand their power supply which was found to be  illegally connected to their quarters, was disconnected  and sealed by the Meghalaya Power  Distribution Corporation Limited  on April 6.
But again on further inspection on April 14, it was found that the seals have been removed and power supply to their quarters was taken directly.
All the accused personnel had direct connections without meters and the illegal load on all the defaulters was found to be 2 kilo watts each.
Besides filing FIRs, the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited has also served  a penalty bill of Rs 78,996 to each of the seven police personnel.
Officials informed that they have violated the  provisions of the Indian Electricity Act 2003  and action can be taken against them if the penalty bill is not cleared within thirty days.
