Editor,
Thanks to the Central Government and the Asian Development Bank for their initiative in trying to bring back cleanliness to Meghalaya by distributing more than one lakh dustbins to the non-urban areas. It was reported also that 31,300 families in the urban areas have received such dustbins for dumping domestic waste (ST 20th April). But, do you see any change in the city with regard to its cleanliness? I would say an emphatic No! In my opinion dustbins alone will not help unless we the people of Meghalaya have an attitude or conscience of cleanliness within us. I personally have the impression that no one bothers for the dustbins in our city. I frequently noticed people complaining about the state of Shillong’s cleanliness in your paper (Letter to the Editor/ Article). In fact, if we walk around the highways and streets of the Shillong city, we will find dustbins being hung along the footpath; but they are either full of waste with no one taking the initiative to empty them or they are not being used because many are not accustomed to using them. Thus, one lakh more dustbins will not keep Meghalaya clean.

St Francis Assisi College doing great job!
Editor,
I would like to express my heart felt gratitude to St. Francis D’Assisi college for the services rendered to the society of Nongstoiñ. The Fraciscans brothers under the leadership of Br. Herman Wanniang CMSF, superior of the house and the C.M.S.F newly elected Provincial of the North East province and with the collaboration of Babu Onesimus Nongsiej and all the people of Ssiejlieh have done a commendable job in setting up a school and most importantly a college in particular which we are in an urgent need of. The college has been a massive blessing for the people of Nongstoiñ and for most towns and villages nearby Nongstoiñ. I personally feel that the college deserves credit and recognition for it’s dedication totally rendering it’s services to the people. St. Francis is a very young institution yet it’s achievement is impeccable. I would like to congratulate the Franciscans Friars for their hard work and for not compromising with any challenges they meet whatsoever. May God bless you and your mission.

Kudos Dipa Karmakar
Editor,
I congratulate Dipa Karmakar for creating a history by becoming the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Olympics. She is also the first ever Indian gymnast to win a gold medal at a global event. The 22-year-old put up a strong performance in the final qualifier, scoring 52.698 points to secure a place in the Rio Olympics 2016. Karmakar’s achievement, is a story of hard work, will power and determination. She showed us the real spirit of youth after winning one of the most dangerous and risky event. While artistic gymnastics looks beautiful and graceful, the Produnova demonstrates how it requires considerable strength and courage. Apart from being the first Indian woman, she will also be an Indian gymnast qualifying for the quadrennial extravaganza after 52 years. Many of our sisters from seven sisters are shining bright in sporting arena. Wish this girl from Tripura all the best for the forthcoming Rio Olympic.
