SHILLONG: The State Council of Science, Technology & Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya along with the rest of the world celebrated the World Earth Day on April 22 by organising an exposure trip for class X students from schools for underprivileged children to museums of Geological Survey of India, Directorate of Mineral Resources and Ever Living Museum, Mawshabuit to enable the youngsters to know more about the earth and its natural resources and how to conserve it.
Lectures were also organised for the students during the exposure trip with M. Khonglah, Senior Geologist, GSI and Dr. Devesh Walia, Head, Department of Environmental Studies, NEHU as the main resource persons.
World Earth Day celebrations were also organised at the block and school levels by respective BDOs.
Besides these, the Council also organised an open essay competition for students between the ages of 14-17 years on the topic ‘Caring Mother Earth-Role of Youth’.
Meanwhile the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya School (JNV), Mawphlang also celebrated World Earth Day with an awareness programme cum quiz campaign for students of class VI-IX under the theme “Trees for the Earth”.
