Incessant rains lead to floods in JH

SHILLONG: Heavy rainfall has lashed Narpuh area of Jaintia Hills for the last two days resulting in flash floods in and around Lumshnong village.
Star Cement’s premises have been submerged under water and the cement plant had to stop operations for a brief period. The rains have caused minor landslides in adjoining areas, resulting in heavy traffic jams, besides affecting electricity and telecommunication in the entire Narpuh Elaka, including Lumshnong, Sunapur, Umkiang and other villages.
Certain portions of the NH-44 have also been affected by landslides.
As per sources Lumshnong recorded over 654 mm of rainfall on Saturday. The water in the streams flowed fiercely, the ground floors of colonies were flooded and people had to take refuge in the top floors with other inmates.
Plying of cement trucks and other vehicles to the local cement plants have been stopped as the road leading to them has been submerged.
Several machines were also damaged due to the heavy rainfall. However, there were no casualties.
