JOWAI: Several accidents cases have been reported from National Highway 44 at night due to absence of back lights, danger lights in trucks and other heavy vehicles plying along the highway.
Besides heavy vehicles, local taxis plying in Jowai usually switch off their headlights thereby putting the pedestrians at risk.
The down sloped NH 44 in Jowai from Dowel Automobile to Lad-kynruh Saphlang is a high risk zone for pedestrians thanks to local taxis plying without lights.
This abnormal and unusual practices by the local taxi drivers to save fuel has already resulted in injuries to few including students coming from evening schools
According to the Superintendent of Police West Jaintia Hills, R. Muthu, “accidents happen during nights due to lack of lights in the trucks. In the past two days Jowai traffic police has detected 15 trucks and a fine of Rs. 4000 has been collected from the vehicles plying without lights at night.”
