SHILLONG: The otherwise somber atmosphere of the Raj Bhavan was on Thursday brimming with young energy as numerous street children were invited for an interaction with Governor V. Shanmuganthan, perhaps the first such privilege for the street children.
The Governor posed queries on the life and activities of the children, who responded without any qualms giving the State’s First Citizen an insight into their lives.
On being asked by the Governor if the children ever felt sad, the children’s innocent replies were that some were abandoned by their parents while some were living in an abusive environment.
As many as 102 street children were invited to the Raj Bhavan as part of the “Visit of Street Children of Shillong to the Governor at Raj Bhavan” organized by the Reach Shillong Ministries.
Rev. R.G. Laloo of Reach Shillong Ministries said the RSM started in 2007 and since then has started an Open Day Shelter and two children’s home.
The Governor lauded the efforts of the Reach Shillong Ministries for educating the children and providing them basic necessities.
While speaking to reporters, he said, “The children have openly revealed their grievances and how they turn to God for comfort.”
“Meghalaya should be an orphan free state and we need to give love and encouragement to such children,” he added.
The Governor also expressed happiness that the children were aware of the National Anthem.
