New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday hinted that it might consider the Centre’s plea to hold the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) examinations in various regional languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Assamese, Bengali and Gujarati, besides English and Hindi.
A division bench, comprising Justices Anil R Dave and Adarsh Kumar Goel, said that they will take opinion after consulting Justice Shiva Kirti Singh on the issue which involves students career. Solicitor General (SG) Ranjit Kumar, senior law officer of the Central government, sought the court’s intervention and clarification as to whether the phase two of the prestigious, NEET examinations, could be held in six regional languages other than English and Hindi.
Kumar sought permission from the division bench of the Apex Court to hold the NEET examinations in six regional languages — Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Assamese, Bengali and Gujarati — besides English and Hindi. Earlier on Friday, the Top Court had said that NEET-II, scheduled for July 24, will allow only those candidates who have not appeared in the May 1 NEET-I examinations irrespective of whether or not they had filled up the forms. But, later on Monday, the SC had said that the students who took NEET-I (National Eligibility Entrance Test) can also appear for NEET II. (PTI)
