Chennai: The Election Commission on Saturday issued notice to AIADMK and DMK to explain the ways to fund the promises made in their poll manifestoes for the May 16 polls.
Acting on a complaint by M.G.Devasahayam against both parties, the commission has asked the two parties to respond by 5 p.m. on Sunday and warned it would take appropriate action against the parties if the parties do not answer to the notice.
The AIADMK has promised free mobile phones to all the ration card holders, free power to households up to 100 units and 50 percent subsidy for purchase of scooters by women.
According to the model code of conduct for political parties drawn by the Election Commission, manifestos should also indicate the rationale for the promises and broadly indicate the ways and means to meet the financial requirement for fulfilling the promises. (IANS)
