Five injured in Upper Shillong accident
SHILLONG: Five passengers of a local taxi  including an infant proceeding towards Upper Shillong area was hit by a Mahindra Bolero coming from the opposite direction at 5th Mile in Upper Shillong on Wednesday  morning.
The 108 Emergency Service Ambulance based in Pomlum helped in shifting Sumarlin Lyngdoh Nonglait (24) and Shanaric Rai (58) to Shillong Civil Hospital while Jeet Lyngdoh Nonglait (3), Lahunlang Lyngdoh Nonglait (1) and Bashaplanti Rongrin (12) were shifted to Ganesh Das Hospital in Lawmali.

19 cattle seized in border
SHILLONG: The troops of BSF BOP Tuka deployed in East Khasi Hills District and BOP Kapasipara of South Garo Hills District on a tip off once again seized 19 cattle from the bordering area on Wednesday.
The BSF in a statement issued on Wednesday said that the BSF personnel have been approaching the local villagers also for their co-operation against these smugglers who are posing threat not only to the local interests but also to National Security.
The special ambush party of BSF laid a trap while some smugglers along with cattle were proceeding towards Bangladesh through a thickly vegetated area. The BSF party, even being small in number charged towards the suspected area and seized 19 cattle.

Rangshken Health Center remains unproductive since 2012
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) Rangshken Unit visited the health center at Rangshken which was left unoccupied since 2012 even after its construction.
The group led by president of Rangshken Unit, Rocky Jana was accompanied by HYC Mawphlang Circle general secretary, Barikupar Pataw on May 7.
The organization in a statement said that the people of the village have been looking forward for the health center for the past 4 years.
It is learnt that the villagers of Rangshken have to travel up to Mawphlang PHC or even till Shillong for medical treatment.
The organization alleged, “The construction of the health center has benefitted the contractors only as time and again repairing works by the contractors are visible in and around the place.”
In this connection the organization urged the office of the DM&HO and local MLA HDR Lyngdoh to look in to the situation and take up necessary steps for the benefit of the poor and needy.

Yoga camp to de-stress BSF personnel
SHILLONG:  In order to fight monotony and pressure augmented with hardships for more than two third of a day in the routine of BSF Jawans, Meghalaya Frontier is organizing a four day yoga camp in co-ordination with  ‘Art of living’ foundation, Shillong starting from Wednesday.
A BSF statement said on Wednesday that the BSF men are living in extreme conditions at the remotest parts of the countries in tremendous and hostile situation fighting with enemy from inside and across the border. In this context, yoga can be a means to de-stress the personnel, the statement added.  Yoga camps may play a vital role in breaking their monotony and reduce stress, the statement said.

Musical event held in city  
SHILLONG: Newly formed Suranjana, a Shillong based socio-cultural organisation presented an evening of music and dance at the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad at Jail Road,Shillong on May 15.
Various genres of predominantly Bengali songs were sung by budding singers from the city.
Well acclaimed vocalist from Kolkata,  Rajeeb Chatterjee enthralled the gathering with his rich collection of songs sung in his characteristic deep and mellifluous voice.
M.Munish Singh, Regional Director of Indian Council for Cultural Relations Shillong, a music lover himself, graced the programme as the chief guest.
Apart from group songs by members of Suranjana including Urmimala Choudhury and Gopa Paul, a concluding duet by  Rajeeb Chatterjee and Sutapa Dutta Choudhury an avid Rabindra Sangeet singer and founder secretary of Suranjana , dance recital choreographed by Arnab Karmakar and performed by Jhumki Bhattacharjee, Alokananda Sen and others  were performed.

Awareness programme on child protection concluded
SHILLONG: The Khasi cultural & social service society concluded the awareness programme at Mawsynram on child protection & child related issues.
Sandra Rnga, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department, called for censure of channels and TV programmes that affects the psychology of children and urged for the society’s participation to reduce crime against children.
“There are over 33 million children out of which nine million are orphans,” Rnga said.
Meena Kharkongor, Chairperson, State Commission for Protection of Child Right elaborated on child rights and related  laws .
