Forest dept seizes trucks carrying charcoal

SHILLONG: In a bid to step up vigilance against illegal charcoal production and transportation, the State Forest Department, the Patrolling squad of Divisional Forest Officer, Khasi Hills (Territorial) Division Shillong has seized two trucks (ML 05 F 4894 and AS 01 DD 5110) carrying illegal charcoal from Umling on the night of May 18.
In a statement, the department informed that regular patrolling is conducted during day and night on highways, roads and in vulnerable points to the check the movement of illegal charcoal.
During the last three weeks, the Patrolling squad of Territorial Division Shillong has seized 17 trucks carrying charcoal illegally.
The trucks and charcoal were seized and offence report was sent to the court for violating Section 9(1) of the Meghalaya Charcoal (Control of production, Storage, Trade and Transit) Rules, 2008 and Section 40 of the Meghalaya Forest Regulation Act, 1973.
