Modi wore traditional attire at Polo Grounds before he addressed the public gathering. While Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan helped Modi to wear the sleeve less Khasi coat (Jymphong), the Chief Minister placed a Garo feathered headgear (Kotip) on Modi’s head much to the applause of the people.

The Prime Minister’s visit had its effect as thin attendance was observed in the state and Central   government offices. Almost all schools of Greater Shillong were given half holiday and students were seen going back home jubilant.
