SHILLONG: Governor V. Shanmuganathan has thrown an open challenge before the youths of Meghalaya to complete the 100 metre sprint in less than 10 seconds.
Addressing the gathering on Friday after releasing a special cover and stamp to commemorate the 65th NEC plenary session in Shillong on May 27, he said Meghalaya can achieve a lot of success in athletics like it has in football.
The Governor expressed a desire to provide training to those youths who are serious about completing the task of running 100 metres in less than 10 seconds.
Stating that the government has taken lot of initiatives in promoting football and harnessing talent, he said that the government here wants to make football “the sport of the common man”.
Earlier, the Governor said that the NEC Plenary Session and the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Shillong has created a massive impact about Shillong and its beauty and now people across the world wants to visit the beautiful state.
“I got a call from my friend in New Jersey who had seen the Prime Minister clicking pictures at Elephant Falls and Mawphlang and now they want to visit Shillong and so this is the impact which the NEC’s plenary session has created about Shillong,” he said.
Earlier, the Governor also handed over cheques to the winners of the ‘North East leads the Way’ run which was organised on the occasion of the 65th NEC Plenary Session and attended by Union DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh.
The Governor also released the special cover and stamp to commemorate the 65th NEC plenary session.
While the cover carries the symbolic image of the scenic beauty of Northeastern states, the stamp carries the image of all the eight states moving together.
The colours in the cover and the stamp have been put keeping in view the Indian Agrarian society and the social beliefs.
