SHILLONG: The funding pattern in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in the city is preventing its proper growth, sources have revealed.
According to sources, the central university utilizes 60% of the fund it receives from the UGC in the Biological Sciences departments and the remaining 40% goes to the other departments.
This ‘unequal’ fund allocation is ‘stalling the growth of some departments’, sources from the university claimed.
They observed that different departments are allocated the same amount of fund for procuring equipment which is not required.
Explaining the disparity with an example, sources pointed that the Mathematics department is allocated the same amount of fund for procuring equipment similar to the department of Statistics whereas in reality “there is not much need of equipment in the former.”
They informed that the Science infrastructure at the university is in a much better shape than others indicating that it is prospering at the cost of other departments.
This 60:40 fund allocation ratio is going on for long and there is a need to utilize the funds more in those departments where they are needed than those where equipment as such isn’t required, added  the sources.
