School students carry out cleaning drive in city gateway

World Environment Day celebrations

SHILLONG: Eight schools comprising of 1st MLP Batallion Secondary School, Mawiong Presbyterian Lower Primary School, St. Dennis Secondary School among others observed the World Environment Day by conducting a cleaning drive at Mawiong Umjapung, the gateway to the Satte capital here on Monday.
During the event, students were seen carrying placards and banners containing slogans aimed at creating awareness on the need to practice cleanliness for a cleaner environment.
S.B Wanniang, Secretary of the Clean Mawiong Umjapung Advisory Committee informed that the participating schools had resolved to repeat such cleaning drives at frequent intervals.
Meanwhile, the Shillong Archdiocese Catholic Youth Movement Zone-V also observed the World Environment Day on June 4 by organising a tree plantation drive. In another programme, the NSS Unit of Women’s College Shillong, the Jong I Youth Development Society (Mawkyrdep) and Seng Samla Shnong Nongthymmai organized a tree plantation programme at Nongthymmai village, Raid Madan in Ri Bhoi.

Meanwhile the World Environment Day was also observed in NEEPCO Corporate Head Quarter, here on Monday.  A short documentary on Kaziranga National Park was also screened on the occasion.
The Partners of Pla Iew Club in collaboration with The Shillong Club Ltd. (Golf Section), the Meghalaya Golf Promoters’ Society and the Forest and Environment Department also organised an awareness programme on protecting the ‘Gleneagles of the East’ at Shillong Golf Course to celebrate the World Environment Day on Monday. The programme began with planting of saplings at the Shillong Golf Club premises led by A H Scott Lyngdoh and other members of the Shilllong Golf Club.
An “eco-quiz” competition was also conducted on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Eastern Panorama in collaboration with the Junior Chamber International Shillong Pine City launched an initiative called ‘Give Back to Mother Earth’ on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. The project included planting of 2016 trees. The plantation was allowed by B. S. Syiem of Hima Khyrim along with Syiem Sad of Hima Khyrim at Lum Bangla, Ing Syiem.

Elsewhere in Ampati, the GHADC annunced that it will work in tandem with concerned district administrations to formulate a plan restricting the use of toxic and non biodegradable substances like plastic to reverse environmental degradation.
This was stated by GHADC Chairman Boston Marak during the observance of World Environment Day at Ampati Degree College organized by the Garo Student’s Union in collaboration with the South West Garo Hills District Administration on Monday.
The GHADC Chairman while elaborating on reversible environmental degradation stated that it was high time the community took upon itself the responsibility to safeguard the environment for the future generations to come. Stating that the unregulated use of plastic bags was destroying the environment he informed that the GHADC would collaborate with respective district administrations to regulate the use of plastic bags.
