SHILLONG: In an attempt to preserve the traditional clan names which are being increasingly tampered with by adding a Western touch, the Executive Committee of the KHADC sent a reminder to five Himas in January this year to list out the existing clans in the respective Himas to enable the Council to codify the same. Notices in this regard have been issued to the various Himas since December 2015.
This was informed by KHADC CEM, PN Syiem on the second day of the Council’s Summer Session here on Tuesday while replying to a resolution moved by KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum who suggested the EC to direct all Himas to list the various clans that exist for immediate codification.
Nongrum felt that codification was mandatory in order to ensure that the schedule tribe status of the locals was not affected.
Over the years, Khasi clan names have undergone a change with the addition of English alphabets “c”, “f”, “z” etc.,. While Khain became Chyne, Khongwir turned to Cunville, Phankon to Fancon, Dohkrut to De Cruze, Dkhar to Dykes, Manar to Manners, Suting to Sootinct etc.
